The 2019 Mw 5.8 Changning, China earthquake: A cascade rupture of fold-accommodation faults induced by fluid injection

چکیده

Industrial production activities associated with salt mining, hydraulic fracturing, or geothermal exploitation can induce pore pressure and stress field changes, thus inducing seismic activity. Most of the events are not disastrous due to limited energy radiated. Here we report a Mw 5.8 damaging event that occurred in Changning, China on June 17, 2019, probably largest induced by industrial ever recorded. The earthquake is located within Changning anticline, it raises great concerns why how relatively quiescent area terms tectonic Moreover, has been debated whether this ruptured solely fold-accommodation faults also involved deep-rooted fault under anticline. By using InSAR data from two satellites, investigate detailed rupture slip pattern earthquake. We propose cascade mode faults, through poroelastic modeling excess fluid injection pumping operations static Coulomb calculation pre-stressed faults. argue water injections may have triggered event. result highlights importance reassessing hazard over similar environments intensive exploitation.

Intraslab rupture triggering megathrust rupture coseismically in the 17 December 2016 Solomon Islands Mw 7.9 earthquake

The 17 December 2016 Solomon Islands earthquake (Mw 7.9) initiated ~103 km deep in the subducting Solomon Sea slab near the junction of the Solomon Islands and New Britain trenches. Most aftershocks are located near the Solomon Islands plate boundary megathrust west of Bougainville, where previous large interplate thrust faulting earthquakes occurred in 1995 (Mw 7.7) and 1971 (Mw 8.0). Teleseis...

The SanrikuOki, Japan, Earthquake of December 28, 1994 Mw 7.7 Rupture of a different asperity from a previous earthquake

Fault geometry, depth, and slip distribution of the Sanriku-oki earthquake of December 28, 1994 (Ms 7.5) are estimated from seismic waveforms, geodetic measurements, and tsunami waveforms, and compared with those of the 1968 Tokachi-oki earthquake (Mw 8.2), the most recent large earthquake in the epicentral region. Seismic wave inversions indicate a shallowly dipping thrust type mechanism and t...

Dynamic rupture of the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake: Roles of a possible subducting seamount

[1] Using a hybrid MPI/OpenMP parallel finite element method for spontaneous rupture and seismic wave propagation simulations, we investigate features in rupture propagation, slip distribution, seismic radiation, and seafloor deformation of the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake to gain physical insights into the event. With simplified shallow dipping (10 ) planar fault geometry, 1D velocity str...

Rupture complexity of the Mw 8.3 sea of okhotsk earthquake: Rapid triggering of complementary earthquakes?

[1] We derive a finite slip model for the 2013Mw 8.3 Sea of Okhotsk Earthquake (Z= 610 km) by inverting calibrated teleseismic P waveforms. The inversion shows that the earthquake ruptured on a 10° dipping rectangular fault zone (140 km× 50 km) and evolved into a sequence of four large sub-events (E1–E4) with an average rupture speed of 4.0 km/s. The rupture process can be divided into two main...
